One of life's adventures is to travel on the open road. There is no better way to do this then on America's Mother Road. The idea to drive with my son who is Autistic was an amazing opportunity to help him learn and experience the world we live in from a totally different perspective. We started out in Charlotte, NC and drove to the starting point in Chicago, IL at the Route 66 "BEGIN" sign. That was the official starting point, but we also enjoyed our trip by starting out at one of the oldest hotels in Chicago and also a landmark that was there in 1926. The Palmer House the most amazing way to start out a journey like this.
The trip took us over 2 weeks total but one week to go from Chicago to LA. We recorded the trip on video during the day and also wrote on the Facebook page and other social media so you can find out more on the trip on those pages. I just wanted to highlight a few things here. The trip was amazing for my son and helped him in ways I can't describe. The other was making the trip in an amazing car the Ford Mustang Mach-e. Going totally full electric and making sure that others know not to be worried if they can do it in their new EV. I can honestly say it was easier in the Mach-e then a regular gas car or suv.
The other major part of the trip I wanted to point out is making memories and moments that are priceless. Driving the open road and enjoying it is something I think you can only get on Route 66. The road has a magical part to it, and if you find that on your trip , you're truly blessed. We made one moment like that when we stopped on one of our night drives. We stopped at an exit and on Route 66 in the middle of nowhere and I had my son get on the roof of the car and I turned off all the lights and we were in total darkness. I did that for one reason and one reason only, and that was so he could finally see the stars. I know we can all see stars in the city, but nothing compares to what you get on Route 66. That one split second when he sees the stars and the universe for the first time is a moment and memory that you can cherish forever. That one moment made Route 66 become truly a magical place for him.
I am forever grateful to those who made this possible such as Ford and Michelin. Thank you for that gift you gave me with my son. You too can do those types of moments pretty easy , just get on Route 66 and let it take you there. Make sure you keep following what we are going to set out to do over the next 4 years. The journey we will take is not just for us, but for the future that is set and for our children and their children to take us to the next 100 years on American's Mother Road. Your mother will take great care of you, and you take care of her and she gives back to you with every single mile you take with her. Enjoy the Ride!
